Thuja plicata Atrovirens, more commonly known as Western Red Cedar is an evergreen conifer with red-brown flaking bark. It has a conical habit and dark-green, neat foliage that may become bronze-tinted in winter. It is slower growing than leylandii and makes a very good hedge although it can still grow up to 60cm (2 ft) per year.
The foliage is slightly scented particularly when crushed. Plant in moist, free-draining soil in any aspect. Needs protection from drying winds, particularly when young. This conifer makes an extremely good hedge. It will reach a height of 20m and a spread of 15m once mature. Contact with skin may cause irritation.
