Our Royal Horticultural Society Field Maple (Acer campestre) is a fast growing native deciduous hedge, which is used either in a mixed hedge or as a single species hedge. It produces young foliage with tinged red, turning to green, then yellow in autumn, with 5 lobbed leaves; green/red in spring and summer and then a buttery yellow colour in autumn. Small green-yellow flowers develop in spring flowed by winged seeds in autumn. It makes an excellent dense hedge. It is suitable for any soil, in particular well drained or moist. It will grow in any position, in particular exposed/windy areas, dry shade or coastal areas. It should be timed to shaped at the beginning of winter. Bare root hedging is a very low cost way of planting a hedge, but is only available to buy and plant when dormant (November-March). Orders ahead of 1st November will be stored to guarantee an early delivery date.
